Magit

Understand a change before you commit it.

Magit is a text-first interface to Git. Its status buffer brings the working tree, staged changes, and recent history together.

Start with M-x magit-status. Stage a hunk rather than a whole file, review the diff, and make a small, purposeful commit.

Magit is an optional package, not part of Emacs itself. Configure a package archive you trust before using :ensure t; the declaration installs it if needed and binds C-x g to its status buffer.

(use-package magit
  :ensure t
  :bind ("C-x g" . magit-status))
